Many may feel what's this about and even think I'm not in my right senses but please do read till the end and then post your comments.
Our parents' generation is what I'm talking about. After their children finished schooling, most of the parents applied for educational loan and sent their children abroad for a Foreign degree. The children did well and secured a job and settled there.
When they consulted their parents, they were encouraged to stay there so that they can flaunt about son working with MNC, sending them GAP tees, nike sneakers, etc..
They came home to get married, took the bride, came for 3 weeks vacation, had get togethers with family and introduced their children and flew away. Those 3 weeks were never sufficient! Parents were invited to stay for 6 months and that didn't work well for parents! They didn't feel at home and so they came back.
Now, parents feel a void! Children did study, earn, took care financially but parents aren't happy! where is the emotional support? At this age too, parents had to run in order to arrange for the functions and children arrive just before a day or two. Everyone has a duplex house but also a trade off - knee pain! Also they have to go alone to hospitals, pharmacy, grocery, etc and as age catches up, they prefer to stay in old age home unable to takeup responsibilities. Again the down side, they don't feel at home! One cannot decide what they want to eat! Its all group oriented!
Now, parents feel it would be great to have the children back but cannot say it to them because children and grandchildren are already settled and wouldn't even think of coming back!
When the Foreign universities were shortlisted, it was the same parents who encouraged them to leave the country saying, we don't have anything here! Go, equip yourself and settle down happily!
Once in a Foreign land, when what all they saw was abundance, how will they leave that?! Parents can be taken care of but our lives in home country isn't secured is what many think today!
When parents cannot lead, they shouldn't mislead! Life in home country isn't dark always and life abroad isn't happy always! There are two sides to every coin!
Thats why I said it's a generation's mistake!
