Geetha had just then completed all the work in the kitchen and moved to the hall to take some rest. It was 9 already and she just sat in the chair under the fan. The power got cut! She hurriedly opened the main door and heard her neighbour telling that it was a maintenance cut and hence will be back only by 5pm. She was little upset as its going to spoil her day’s programs.
Geetha is a home-maker and her daily chores is like this. She sends off Ram at 8.30 in the mornings and finishes other tasks by 9. Relaxes for a while by connecting to the internet and then comes the cleaning jobs, washing clothes, etc. By the time, its 11 already and she prepares lunch for Ram who comes home by 1.00. she then cleans the vessels and reads some books or watches some movie. By 5 pm, she goes in for a walk for 30 minutes and by 6, shes in front of the idiot box again. Then comes the plan for dinner and she starts cooking by 7 and the day’s over after the dinner at 9.30. She again has to clean the utensils and plan for the next morning.
This day was not going on as per her plan! She could not login gmail or fb due to the powercut! Though that did upset her a little, she tried to come out of it. After sweeping, she kept the main door and the balcony door open! This welcomed in the breeze along with the dust. She used to worry about the dust but today she had no option. She remembered Ram’s gift of a music player which can play radio too with the battery. She quickly opened that and starting enjoying the tamil movie songs played over the fm. Since there was power cut, she had planned for a simple lunch as she cannot use the mixie. Her neighbour too had kept her door open and hence since both of them were free, Radha came home and they had a nice chat for 30 minutes.
The power cut had its own charms. Nobody could turn on the idiot boxes and there was silence everywhere. Every house was lit up with laughter as people had gathered to have some chat. Small babies could not be put to sleep and were enjoying everyone’s attention. Geetha had to cook and hence came home and finished cooking quickly to return to the chat conference! By 12.30, Geetha came home to set up things for lunch and to welcome Ram by 1. After lunch, she went to her book shelf which kept calling her for so many days and she refused to go near it. This is the time and she grabbed her favorite book and came to the hall. With the radio playing her favorite music and the favorite book in hand, Geetha just forgot herself!
By 4, she could listen to all sort of noises from the near by apartments, since children were back from school. She went down to the common place in the ground floor and was surprised to see so many people already talking happily. Kids were having a great time playing without moms bugging them to do the homework. By 5, the power came and the kids shouted in joy as they could enjoy the cartoons. Though the elders loved this kind of gathering, they didn’t have the heart to leave the place but wanted to get back home to watch their favorite serials.
Geetha suddenly realised that the day was so packed and rejuvenating. She secretly wished for such frequent powercuts.
Actually, the television is a good companion for people staying alone. It again depends on the choice of programs. If we watch some good ones, it’s a good companion. If we spend our time on the serials that are played, then it’s a time killer. No serial seem to show happy happenings at home. It shows rivalry, cunningness, revenge or some boring jokes. Many of us, including our elders spend a lot of time in front of the television and powercuts such as these will save not only the electricity but also our energy from watching such kind of programs.

I realised that here. I didnt get a cable connection here and was spending lots of time with my kid..But after I got laptop and started watching onine movies, I feel the time for the kid has reduced. i was telling my hubby not to have cable connection once we r back to India.but again self discipline is most important.
ReplyDeleteI am remembering of my childhood days (days when only DD was available), my grandma and me used to do star gazing and she used to tell me lot of moral stories. I don't think my sister enjoys the same privilege as me as my grandma is now busy watching tv serials
