Life's syllabus
As a kid, I used to wonder what use is to me to learn Boyle's law, vector algebra, trigonometry and calculus. After I grew up,I joined an IT giant and life was happy. Not once did I have to worry about the above and what mattered most was how I was at work, my attitude, my relationship with the team, my manager and the clients and how I accomplished the given tasks.
As I moved on to another company, the word go-getter amazed me! On the day of joining, the company's director told me that I should be a go-getter here. It was a revelation for me. As I was new, nobody would help me voluntarily and I had to sit with them, make appointments and jot down my queries and their inputs. Slowly, I started to probe more and the answers came. I understood the word go-getter!
I have always wondered, why children should study subjects which they wouldn't be using much in life! For that, we need to spend on tuitions, doing night-outs, mock tests, entrance examinations, etc..
I strongly feel the syllabus should be changed for them. Life's skills must be taught than calculus, Vector algebra, animal cell! Other than doctors, who's going to look at animals, that way?!
That's why many children who are toppers are introverted and shy. They don't want to talk. They are more comfortable with the gadgets than people! All this is fine till they finish school. After that, they need to open up.
Till the age of 10 years, kids are very smart, bright and extroverted. They are enrolled into many competitions and they gain confidence by meeting many children and elders. Once they get into 6th grade, they confine themselves to books since the syllabus is challenging and they don't want to upset their parents.
It's enough if they get their basics right! That's all matters. Not all the children can take up pressures and not as young as 5-6 year olds!
We wouldn't have also not been seated at one spot for more than 10 minutes but we expect kids as young as 3-4 years to stay in one place for even 30 minutes! How rude its to expect them to talk about something for 5 sentences once a week?! Not all children can do that and it's fine! They shouldn't be judged based on these performances. They will talk eventually.
Kids compare grades and feel bad if they don't get an A! Let's tell them that the A, B or C isn't important but what's important is they try to read those 3 letter words and understand their meanings in a fun way.
Nobody's handwriting is as printed in the book even though they would have had their share of cursive writing as kids! Other than making to do lists, I don't see anyone writing anything! Women makes these lists, doctors write prescriptions, who else does? Is it not enough if its legible? Don't cross the red line, give a curve, write in between blue lines, come on!
I think kids should have panchatantra, Mahabharata story time and practices like archery, skipping, Yoga as part of their curriculum. Focus, flexibility and clarity are more important than reciting rhymes!
When an academic year begins, they start with 3 letter words and by the end of an year, they write sentences!! Its tough for us, parents too. Many of our professions and our degrees and our passion do not match!
The rat race should end and everyone should have an equal opportunity. Children should have the choice to pursue their passion, be it anything from music, sports or academics.
When all professions are respected, paid and treated equally, a new dawn will arise! Praying our kids will see that day.
